Thinking about my own media usage, I’ve decided to look into Netflix. Netflix is a popular platform to watch films and series, I, myself use Netflix on a daily basis as a university student I don’t have a TV license and so Netflix is my main source of entertainment.

I will be specifically looking at the glamorisation of serial killers in documentaries such as The Ted Bundy Tapes and the series; YOU (particularly to females). I believe that in recent years there has been a glamourisation of serial killers, an interesting one being The Zodiac Killer in which there are dedicated fanbases who are interested in solving the mystery, meeting regularly to look over the facts. You could say that social media and streaming has essentially increased this activity making fanbases easily accessible.

I would be interested to find out how other people have taken a perspective on the Ted Bundy series as well as the recent announcement that Zac Efron would play Ted Bundy in the film version (due to the controversy surrounding this decision).

I think I am drawn to Netflix because it has become a major platform among young people and can contribute to how we behave; the influence of media. They also break away from terrestrial TV by making their own productions and has become easily accessible through an app that people can download on any device.

Essentially I think this is a manageable topic because I will be able to interview or even take a survey of people on whether they agree with this statement and whether they are drawn to the psychological side of the programs that are being produced on Netflix. I would be interested to find out whether it affects females more than males due to the representation of the killers.

Possible question: Does Netflix increase the glamourisation of serial killers in their programs?

Perhaps because of the exposure through series and documentaries, serial killers have been given almost a ‘celebrity’ status and have become household names which has led to an unhealthy glamourisation of the serial killers.
